ABILITIES :❝ DARK ARTS. Bellatrix is incredibly skilled in dark magic. She is widely considered to be the most formidable dark witch of the age. She is capable of many performing many feats that most others cannot - including Fiendfyre - in an expert manner.❝ ANIMAGUS. Following her stint in Azkaban, Bellatrix became an unregistered Animagus. She saw Sirius use this ability to escape prison and internally kicked herself for not having done it herself. Her Animagus form is a large, black bird.❝ MASTER DUELIST. During her Hogwarts years, Bellatrix was the undefeated duelling champion. She is widely considered to be one of the best in the world and is pretty much the last person you want to be up against in a one-on-one fight. She is very quick on her feet and adept at wordless spell-casting, making it difficult to anticipate her next move. Furthermore, she is often underestimated; people assume she is entirely crazy and impulsive, but she can be very tactical in a fight and is not above playing dirty.
❝ HOGWARTS ERA
Bellatrix is probably the smartest student, but she's nowhere near the most popular.
Despite this, everybody knows her; she is a Black, and even as an adolescent she is intimidating. She is a bit of a loner and hardly interacts with anyone outside of her two sisters.
She is a terror at school, often in detention for tormenting other students. For all her acting out, however, Bella does consider Hogwarts to be her safe haven. Her home life is tumultuous, to say the least, and the effects of her living environment are a big part of the reason she is the way she is.
Her favourite classes are DADA, Potions and Transfiguration. She absolutely detests Divination, and she would rather die than step foot in a Muggle Studies class.
Unfortunately, her family - especially her father - is pushing her down a very dark path. She was promised to Rodolphus Lestrange from the moment she was born, and despite her abhorrence towards the idea of being tied to him, she doesn't see a way out. Except, that is, for the promises made to her by Tom Riddle. Tom is the only person in Bellatrix's life who truly sees her potential and offers her a chance to be more than a perfect little pureblood broodmare.

❝ CANON
Bellatrix’s childhood shattered her mind completely. She embraced the Dark Lord entirely, pledging allegiance to him and escaping the rule of her father.
Finally, after a lifetime of fear, Bellatrix is the one with the power. She takes the opportunity to cause as much pain and fear as she can; in a way, this is her twisted way of coping. Bellatrix is tired of being the victim, so she becomes the perpetrator instead. Her fervour is little to do with her pureblooded beliefs; she’s vicious in her hatred towards non-purebloods, but only because she knows it hurts them. She delights in fear and pain and will inflict it in any way she can, giving her victims a taste of the life she’d endured.
When it came to the torturing of the Longbottom’s, Bellatrix wasn’t actually the ring leader. She arrived later, and Alice and Frank had already been driven mad by the others. But the crime was attributed to Bella, and she took the blame happily; she’s well used to taking the blame for things, and at least this way it adds to her reputation and keeps people afraid of her.
She isn’t in love with Voldemort, but she does see him as her lord and saviour. He gave her a way out of her childhood home, and she is eternally thankful for it. She even sees him as something of a protector, despite how cruelly he treats her. In fact, she’s so used to violence and cruelty that she doesn’t even think anything of it, it doesn’t dampen her view of him at all.
This version of Bellatrix is broken, shattered, forever lost in her own fractured mind. She’s vile, cruel, devoted and completely mad. There’s no room for redemption for her because she’s too far gone to even realise that there could be another path.
❝ ORDER SPY AU
On the surface, much seemed the same as in canon, but Bellatrix was actually recruited as a double agent along with Severus.
Only Dumbledore, McGonagall and Snape were aware of Bellatrix’s work. Due to her high rank within the Death Eaters, being a double agent was especially dangerous. Only the four of them knew, and all were prepared to take it to the grave, knowing that if Bellatrix was found out, she was worse than dead.
However, this path was not smooth sailing for Bella. Despite working for the light in secret, she often had doubts about her allegiance. This was most apparent after she was sentenced to Azkaban, where the light side left her to rot and the dark side broke her out.
When Severus was murdered on the eve of battle, Bellatrix finally knew with certainty that she was doing the right thing. Severus had been her confidant over the years, the only other person who understood the danger and pressure of what she was doing. His death fuelled her conviction and her status remained undiscovered until the final battle, where she turned on her supposed allies and took many of them down singlehandedly.
Following the Battle of Hogwarts, Bella received a full pardon from the Ministry. This was met with public outrage, but McGonagall provided all the evidence needed to prove that Bellatrix had been with them all along.
She assisted in the rebuilding of Hogwarts and took up residence as Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor. The irony isn’t lost on her.
HEADCANONS

❝ ALL VERSIONS.
✭ Bella grew up in an incredibly abusive household. Both of her parents were cruel to her, but her father was an absolute monster. He frequently abused her physically, verbally, and psychologically.
✭ After the birth of her sisters, Bellatrix took it upon herself to shield them from her father's ire as much as she could. If her sisters misbehaved, she would take the blame or do something worse so she would be punished instead of them.
✭ A part of her always looked up to McGonagall, although she was very careful to never let it show. Not only was McGonagall the head of Gryffindor house, she was also a known Order member. Bellatrix’s admiration would be considered treason.
✭ Her traditional pureblooded belief system was ingrained in her for as long as she could remember. In her father's house, there was simply no room to even think about questioning them.
✭ When her sister Andromeda left, Bellatrix was devastated. She channelled her grief into anger at Andromeda for two reasons. Firstly, because she was angry that her sister could leave her and Narcissa in that house, after all Bella had done to protect them. Secondly, because she was terrified of her father's wrath and hoped that showing extreme disgust in her sister's actions would stop Cygnus from taking his anger out on her. It didn't, and Bellatrix resents Andromeda for this for a very, very long time.
✭ Bellatrix keeps a secret collection of Muggle Gothic literature in her room, charmed to the max to ensure that anyone who went looking won't be able to read them. She likes to read, and fear of her father isn't enough to curtail her thirst for knowledge.
✭ Bellatrix’s boggart is a big, black dog. She doesn't ever tell anyone, but she's terrified of dogs. The fear has been with her since childhood, and was brought on by a particular incident. She was only around 9 years old, and father was angry with her. her punishments would vary; physical beatings, the Cruciatus curse. but sometimes, he would lock her in with the dogs. Cygnus kept several hunting dogs, you see. Large, wolf-like creatures with snarling jaws and sharp fangs dripping with spittle. And young Bellatrix would be thrown in with them, sometimes left overnight, in the dark, screaming as they growled and panted in her ears. If not that, they'd be set loose on her, and she'd run from them through the gardens of her family home.
✭ This is another reason tensions are so high with her cousin, Sirius. He transforms into the very creature that haunts Bellatrix’s nightmares. I’m sure you can imagine her distress when Sirius escaped from prison and that big, black dog walked past her cell. it took her a moment to realise that it wasn't father's dog... it was her cousin. She begged him to let her out, but he walked away. She hates him for it.
✭ Bella wears exclusively long sleeves. She has scarring around both her wrists from the shackles in prison.
❝ AU EXCLUSIVE.
✭ Bellatrix is still very abrasive and mean. Despite working for the light, she’s definitely morally grey.
✭ She’d rather cough up slugs than admit it, but Bellatrix is very influenced by McGonagall. She always secretly admired her and craves validation from her that she never got from her parents. She always preferred to think she was reporting to McGonagall than Dumbledore.
✭ She has horrific night terrors. They range from things that happened when she was young to things that she had to do throughout the Wizarding Wars. The death of Severus and her torture of Hermione Granger are particularly haunting.
✭ Bellatrix is heavily dependent on sleeping draughts to get any rest. She has roughly double the regular dose, needing to be practically tranquillised to avoid night terrors. She also has a very unhealthy relationship with alcohol and self-harm.
✭ Surprising basically everyone, she’s actually an excellent teacher. She’s very knowledgeable and good at explaining difficult concepts. Her students always come out of class having learned something. That’s not to say they like her, though. Even though her innocence is public knowledge, her students are still terrified of her.
✭ Her dark mark left an ugly scar when Voldemort died. She hates looking at it almost as much as she hates other people seeing it. It reminds her of all the terrible things she did for the greater good. And, more than anything, she hates that, despite everything she'd done, people would still look at her with disgust when they saw that scar and know she'd carried that mark.
